Understanding Calendar Event Durations & How To Read Event Timers

On the game calendar, 11 days were highlighted for the Osten event, but in the game it only ran for 10 days. Similarly, 15 days were marked for the Cuti event, but Runaway said we had 13 days to complete our set. (They made a mistake in posting that, actual duration wasn't 13 days.) So what is really going on? Is this even important?

For easy events, most players will probably perfect their moths way ahead of the deadline, so there is no need to bother. However, for trickier ones like the Osten event where every single day is precious, you need to be able to gauge event durations accurately. Also, if you are planning ahead and trying to decide when you should use your Egg Layers for an event, you need to know why event durations seem to be marked longer than they should be, so you don't get tricked into thinking that you have an extra day.

December 2016 Calendar

Why are events marked longer than they seem?

Events do not kickstart immediately at midnight. They usually begin at 2pm PST (note that Runaway may change the starting times so always check your calendars for the starting times), so depending on where you are in the world, the event may begin at a different time of the day. For me, 2pm PST is 6am in my country.

The Osten event is marked from 25th November to 5th December 2016, thats 11 coloured boxes on the in-game calendar. So on 25th Nov, the game starts at 6am in my timezone and runs for exactly 10 days (meaning 10 x 24 hours). On the last day, the event will end at the same time it began on the first day. This means that when the new day begins on 5th Dec, which is supposedly the last day for the Osten event, I will only have a few hours left till 6am before the event officially ends.

Therefore, due to timezone differences, it is safe to assume that:

Actual Event Duration = (No. of days marked on Calendar - 1 day) x 24 hours

Although it is a known fact that all players have the same amount of time during events to work on their moths, it may problematic for players who are ahead in timezones, where events begin just after midnight hours. If you are planning to use your Egg Layers just in time before the event ends, do note that you don't actually have the entire 24 hours on the last day marked on your game calendar. On top of that, you also need to buffer time for feeding and morphing your caterpillar.

To show how much time you have left, there will be a timer on the top right hand corner of your screen during any event.

But the Osten event just started! How come my timer says 9 Days left instead of 10 days?

If you set a countdown timer to run for exactly 1 hour, it will immediately go into 0 hours and 59 mins after you hit the start button. It is the same for timers in the game, if an event is set to run for 10 exact days, the timer will go into 9 days 23 hours and 59 mins immediately when it begins. Well, but the game can't display the whole 9 day 23 hours 59 mins thing, its too damn long lol! So it just says 9 days in the corner of your screen.

During the last 24 hours of the event, the timer will go into an hourly countdown. So do not panic if you see that there is only 1 day left on the timer, it just means that you still have 24++ hours.

Ok, think you got the hang of it? So once again, Runaway said that the Cuti event runs for 13 days, but refer to the December calendar above and take a look at the screenshots below taken by players during the start of the Cuti event. Can you determine the actual event duration? Scroll down to the end of this post to look for the answer~!

Cuti Wisp Event: Moth Set and Deco Abilities

A Christmas event!

Moth Set

 #71 Slender Burnished Brass

 #72 Clouded Silver Moth

#73 Gold Moth

 #74 The Angel Moth

 #75 Golden Emperor Moth

Decoration Rewards & Abilities

***
Yay for free presents! Works like any other gift by friends and can be duplicated by an ability.

**
I haven't got anything else from the Large Jolly apart from x3 normal fireflies all the time. Considering the 3 day cooldown, this deco isn't really worth it as you only get 1 frog treat a day. If you do not have enough deco spots opened for this cactus, you aren't really missing out too much I guess.

*****
Another free Egg Layer~! Wheee~! Egg Layer abilities are always well sought after as they are the key to perfecting past limited edition moths. Don't we all just simply love em~! xD

How To Get Zodiac Flowers For Free

Tim from Runaway mentioned in his latest live broadcast that Zodiac flower missions appear in a voodoo-black-magic fashion (lol!), but after a while it is quite easy to understand how it works. So how do you actually get these rare pretties?

Short answer:

You can earn Zodiac flowers from Michelle. You get a chance of landing on a Zodiac flower mission on the 3rd hard mission of the day.

Long answer:

Missions from Michelle follow a pattern. She gives you an easy mission first, if you complete it successfully she gives you an intermediate mission next, and finally she gives you a hard mission. Then the cycle resets. So every time you reach a hard mission, there is a chance of you bagging a Zodiac mission from her!

Easy missions take 30 mins or 1 hour. Intermediate missions take 4 hours. Hard missions take 8 hours.

If you fail an easy or intermediate mission, the cycle resets and you need to start from the beginning. The cycle also automatically resets at midnight.

Watch Tim’s explaination here! (approc 22:30) He also mentioned that they are revamping the missions system, and the update will only be ready next year onwards, so for now you can only rely on this method.

Tips to get more Zodiac flowers

1) Narrowing down your mission options

Michelle never gives you a mission if you don’t have that particular moth in your forest already. Moths in your storage don’t count, so far throughout my entire gameplay I have never encountered getting a mission that requires me to retrieve a moth from my storage. Hence, you can actually rig missions by storing all other possible 8 hour mission moths to increase your chances of landing on a Zodiac mission.

Moths to have in your forest for Zodiac missions (fully levelled):

  1. Four O'Clock Moth
  2. Any Large Moth
  3. Diva Moth
  4. Any Rare Moth

Moths you can keep away to increase the chances of Zodiac missions:

  1. ALL Small moths
  2. Sweet Potato Hornworm
  3. ALL Zodiac moths

And if you have a large storage space and want to push your chances even higher you can also store:

  • ALL Uncommon moths
  • ALL Large moths (decreases 1 Zodiac mission chance but ups your chances of landing on other Zodiac missions)

For a full list of missions, moths required and their rewards, refer to this wiki page.

2) Mission switching

If you do not land on a Zodiac mission for your 8 hour flight, you can choose switch missions immediately so you do not waste time!

For example, mission no.4 "Inferno" requires 1 Glowbuck to switch to, and only takes 1 hour to run. At the end of the mission you get 1 Glowbuck back as a reward! Wheeee~! (If you are narrowing down your mission options by storing all small moths, remember to store the Fiery Campylotes when its back.)

After you complete a switched mission, the mission cycle resets. This means that you need to complete an easy and intermediate mission once more before Michelle will give you another hard mission.

3) Half time mission events

Runaway occasionally have events for half price mission switching and half time missions. It is a great opportunity to take advantage of these events to rack up Zodiac flowers!

Buying Zodiac flowers from the Shop

Sometimes Zodiac flowers will also be available in the Shop, so don't forget to keep checking when it refreshes! They can be bought with both Glowbucks or honeydew coins.

Osten Firefly Event: Moth Set and Deco Abilities

Moth Set

 #81 Clymene Tiger

 #82 Eastern Buckmoth

 #83 Hummingbird Clearwing

 #84 Regal

Decoration Rewards & Abilities

If you have good time management skills, you need not rely on these deco abilities. All they do is to save you a bit of time. Eventually you will achieve the same results when the moth emerges from its chrysalis. Still, having them is pretty fun, especially if you are impatient and can't wait for your creatures to grow~! If you are low on Glowbucks, you may want to consider putting this set in a lower priority for visiting moths, and save your precious currency on other sets that will give you more useful decos. Maybe in future if Runaway releases events that require you to rush through time, we may see more value in these pretty flowers.

Yokai Wisp Event: Moth Set and Deco Abilities

This event is in line with Halloween!

Moth Set

 #60 Penella Burnet

#61 Lygodium Spider Moth

 #62 White Clearwig Tussock

#63 Vampire Moth

#64 Greater Death's Head

Decoration Rewards & Abilities

Fun cosmetic effect to play with. You can turn it on or off whenever you like for extra spookiness.

***
One of the hardest 'Hide & Seek' deco to date, especially if your forest is filled with tons of large decos that fills your screen to create perfect hiding spots. I rarely finish hunting down all 10 of the creepy bugs before they scatter away when time runs out, but when I do, I get a bunch of freebies! They mostly drop coins, but sometimes if you are lucky you can bag expansion materials and even Glowbucks!

***
Spooktacular! This deco spawns a giant Halloween pumpkin which drops a random number of normal fireflies. (Minimum x1 firefly, the most I ever got was x8!) If luck is by your side, you may even bag a fat firefly delicacy, which you can feed to Trevor for super rare flowers!

Boom Wisp Event: Moth Set and Deco Abilities

Moth Set

 #65 Ringed Lesser Ermine

 #66 Fulveolans Long-tailed Burnet

 #67 Orange Spotted Burnet

 #68 Roseate Emperor

 #69 Cabbage Tree Emperor

 #70 Marbled Emperor

Decoration Rewards and Abilities

*****
Use this ability on a Wisp during an event for a 100% catch rate! It's extremely useful when you feel that the cheeky wisp will definitely fly away!

*****
Catch rate is randomly preassigned to the cloned wisp, and may differ from the original. This means that if the original wisp is a catchable one, it is possible that the duplicated wisp can escape if you are unlucky. Overall, this is an awesome ability that helps to make up for any Wisps that you are lacking.

*****
This gives you 1 extra wisp cycle everyday! It cuts down your waiting time for the next release by a maximum of 2 hours. It is valuable due to events being exclusive and time limited in nature.

All 3 decos in this set are well deserving of a 5-star rating, as they are important to help you progress through Wisp events. The only downside is that they are pretty much useless when there are no events going on. If you have not perfected this set, I highly recommend doing so and collecting all moths in this set from Visiting Moths!
